Old Block Cabernet Sauvignon
Estate Bottled | Red Mountain
- Vineyard: 100% Kiona Estate
- Composition: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon
Cabernet Sauvignon is King on Red Mountain, but that was not always a given. When John Williams and Jim Holmes pioneered this region in 1975, 1/3 of their original planting was dedicated to the grape, then not widely considered a commercially viable cultivar for Washington state wine.
Times have changed. More than 98% of Red Mountain acreage is dedicated to red cultivars, and best current estimates put Cabernet Sauvignon at about 60% of overall planted acreage. Red Mountain is famous because the Cabernet Sauvignon grown here is distinctive and delicious; it’s our definitive grape.
This 2021 vintage marks the seventh iteration of this special wine, crafted using grapes exclusively from that original 1975 block that started it all. We find that the Kiona Estate “Old Block” produces wines with unparalleled complexity, elegant structure, and layered intrigue. It’s an absolute delight to share this wine with you; it’s been nearly fifty years in the making.
