2022 Estate Bottled Red Mountain Heart of the Hill Mourvèdre - Info Card - All Clubs
Decanter, based in the UK, is one of the world's top wine publications. They've been enthusiastic about our releases over the last several years, as exemplified by this glowing review for the new 2022 Estate Bottled Red Mountain Heart of the Hill Mourvèdre. This is one of the longest wine reviews I've ever seen, and it's worth sharing in its entirety:
"This wine comes from the Heart of the Hill, a site Kiona planted over time from 2006 to 2014, with only 3.8 acres of Mourvèdre, a variety coveted by the winemaking team at Kiona. With this wine, Tyler Williams has crafted what I believe is the finest Kiona wine I’ve tasted to date; it abounds with freshness, depth and sauvage concentration. There is an (sic) feral elegance and intensity on the nose, with wonderful wild herbs, rose petals, and smoked sea salt. The palate is loaded with garrigue and pops of pomegranate and taut early-season blackberry, which front a gamy, almost umami baseline of black olives and charred venison. It’s deliciously complex, ripe and concentrated but with plenty to think about in its smoky, savoury depth. Only 13.5% abv, it shows what’s possible in terms of ripeness without unnecessary overextraction or overripeness."
We feel that this release perfectly captures the ethos of our vineyard and winemaking teams: fruit first, fantastic balance, restrained oak influence, all framed with a freshness and vibrancy.
2022 Estate Bottled Red Mountain Cabernet Franc - Info Card - All Clubs
We have Cabernet Franc planted in two spots - 2.8 acres at Kiona Estate, and 2.6 acres at Artz Vineyard. To put it bluntly, we wish we had more. In addition to being a superb blending component, the variety excels as a stand-alone wine, offering up beautiful aromatics alongside an incredible balance of red fruit and savory, herbal character. As a parent of Cabernet Sauvignon, there's a clear stylistic thread to its more famous offspring, but served up in a more lithe, suave package.
This 2022 Cabernet Franc bottling, one of just a handful in our 50-year history, is the first to include fruit from Artz Vineyard. We purchased the site in 2019, one year after our last Cabernet Franc release (2018). It's a fantastic component that comprises 40% of the blend.
It's worth mentioning the unique élevage of this wine - it saw just 10.3% new Slovakian oak for 31 months, with the balance 3rd fill and neutral. This program prioritizes time over intensity in the cellar; we want the wine to age gracefully without imparting overt wood character. Slovakian oak, still relatively rare in American winemaking, is comparatively more subtle and fresh than a traditional French oak barrel. We are big fans.
We anticipate having less than 30 cases of this left over after the Spring Release - it was grown, picked, vinified, and bottled as a club wine from start to finish.
Red Mountain Pioneer Red Version IV - Info Card - All Clubs
It took moxie, resolve, and a pioneering spirit to plant a vineyard in the Middle of Nowhere, Washington back in 1975. That dusty slope and the “Kiona Estate” vineyard John and Ann planted eventually grew to become the Red Mountain AVA, now considered one of the top grape-growing regions in the New World.
Pioneer Red exists as a tip-of-the-cap to their ongoing legacy. Version IV presents as a playful take on a right-bank style Bordeaux blend - Merlot and Carmenère comprise more than 2/3 of the cuvée. Together, they bring refined tannin and powerful fruit, all nicely framed with a pretty French oak regimen. Non-traditional components–Grenache and Petite Sirah–round out the blend, bringing aromatics that pop, fantastic color, and powerful structure.
We expect Pioneer Red to be consumed in its youth, although it should age nicely.
We anticipate having less than 10 cases of this left over after the Spring Release - it was grown, picked, vinified, and bottled as a club wine from start to finish.
2024 Estate Bottled Red Mountain Sage Advice - Info Card - Mixed Club Only
Lauded for world-class, intensely concentrated Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, Red Mountain also features specialty plantings of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon that have never been more popular. The mantra, “if it grows together, it goes together” holds true at our estate Artz Vineyard, where we have a total of 5.2 acres of the two noble grapes planted together in one block.
Red Mountain’s hot, dry summers differ wildly from other popular Sauvignon Blanc-producing regions like New Zealand (which is much cooler), France (which is much wetter), and California (features less diurnal shift). So we can capture the ripeness, roundness, and texture of warmer regions, while keeping the acidity and balance of the cooler regions. It’s really a Goldilocks situation for our venerable duo, featured here in the 2024 Estate Bottled Sage Advice.
Once the grapes hit the crushpad, our winemaking team gave them the absolute top-of-the-line white wine treatment - fermented and aged in a 1000L Austrian puncheon, stirred every other week for 11 months, full lees. We only have one of these puncheons, which is why the production of this wine was limited to just 106 finished cases.
We anticipate having less than 20 cases of this left over after the Spring Release - it was grown, picked, vinified, and bottled as a club wine from start to finish.
2025 Estate Bottled Red Mountain Rosé of Sangiovese - Info Card - Mixed Club Only
In just ten years, rosé wines grew from a novel afterthought to one of the hottest categories in the drinks industry. This certainly holds true at Kiona, where our yearly iteration consistently sells out despite regular increases in production.
The 2025 Estate Bottled Red Mountain Rosé of Sangiovese hails exclusively from our Kiona Estate vineyard, where we dedicate rows specifically for rosé production. Sangiovese is a red wine grape, but for rosé, we’re not concerned with deep color and ripeness as we might be if we were producing a red wine. We farm the rosé-destined rows at a higher yield, resulting in more acid and less color concentration, much like we would a white cultivar. It’s fair to think of this as a white wine produced from red grapes.
There’s a reason Sangiovese is used to make some of the world’s most famous–and delicious–rosés. The stalwart Italian grape thrives in this role, exhibiting incredible freshness, layered, nuanced texture, and beautiful color, all bouyed by food-friendly acidity. For friends and lovers.
